CHAPTER THIRTEEN

It was still dark, yet the scene of the brutal mountain battle was as noisy and chaotic as they’d ever been. The noise of aircraft engines could have been heard for miles as it made its way back to Da Nang or wherever else it had flown from. Small crates slung under parachutes fell to the ground all around the battlefield. No sooner had they crashed to the surface, and the men were at them. Hands, picks, and other tools went right to work as they split them open and removed the desperately needed contents. Food and water were important, but nothing was more critical than ammunition. None of them even saw the plane as the sound of its engines vanished into the night.

The sound of chainsaws filled the early hours of the morning as the men went to work cutting a wide clearing for the helicopters to land. They had chosen a spot roughly in the middle of the defensive facility where the ground was reasonably level, though it did contain two bunkers and a trench that were now being systematically pulled down and filled in.

“Well there we go, more bullets for the meat grinder.”

Corporal Johnson leant back against the trench wall and sucked on a cigarette. There were a few of the squad around him as they took a short break before getting back into the hard grind of preparing the ground. The rest of the platoon was hard at work, as was what remained of Charlie Company. But while they were all busy, there was also a shift in the mood of the men. They had seen a lot of death and destruction over the last days, and many were still too shaken to even speak. One wiped dirt from his face, and Johnson could see the young soldier’s hand shaking.

“Kid…take a drag.”

He leant in a little closer, and the Private drew in a deep breath, causing him to cough, much to the nervous laughter of the other three men.

“Don’t mean nothing, kid.” Johnson took the cigarette back, “This is just another day in ‘Nam. Trust me. Give it a few weeks, and we’ll be back on another field.”

“Don’t mean nothing,” muttered some of the others.

Johnson leant forward and struck one of them on the back before rising to his feet.

“You’ve all made it this far. Get out of this valley, and you’ll have respect like nothing else in this here army.”

He then pulled himself up onto the side of the trench, with his M60 resting like a trusted friend up against it.

“You know last year this all happened before?”

“You’re kidding?” asked a surprised, spectacled soldier of no more than twenty-one.”

“I shit you not, Private. Almost a year ago, Command launched…what was it…Oh, yeah…”

He raised out his arms to his sides as though proclaiming something from a church pulpit. One by one the men nearby looked to him. He might only be Corporal, but something about him and the confidence that exuded from him demanded they listen.
